Quality day in store for Cup

THE decision made earlier in the year to reduce the distance of tomorrow's Carlton Draught Coffs Harbour Gold Cup to a mile looks to have paid off with a strong field ready to line-up for the biggest race on the Coffs Coast calendar.

The Gerald Ryan-trained Striking Victory is making the trek to Coffs Harbour as Ryan aims to win his second Gold Cup while previous winners Mr Gold Fire and Derivative Receipt will also be back to try and grab another shot of glory.

“I think it's really pleasing and I think it justifies the decision we made when you look at the quality in the field,” Coffs Harbour Racing Club CEO Russ Atkinson said yesterday.

“Obviously with no scratchings we've got a full field of 16 which is fantastic to see.”

Atkinson hinted that the quality isn't just in the Cup field either and that racegoers should enjoy a terrific day's racing.

“If you look at the Sprint, there's some good horses in that and while the numbers aren't super high, I think the quality is there,” he said.

The chances of a locally trained horse winning the Cup for the first time since 1991 looks to have also increased due to the reduction in the distance – Frisco Model, Intermac and Returnoftheking all entered in the main event and all call the stables at the Coffs Harbour track home.

For the punters, the Coffs Harbour Cup meeting has a history of delivering big TAB dividends in recent seasons. Betting was spirited during last year's Cup meeting with the Quadrella paying $15,455.70.

Two years ago, the First 4 dividend on the Cup itself paid a massive $36,473.90 for the combination of Mr Gold Fire, Cold Start, Gold Lager and Windon.

Atkinson did say though that the day isn't just about the racing as there's something in store for everyone who attends.

“You've got your Fashions on the Field and Carlton Draught have organised a couple of parachute jumps with Mario Fenech from The Footy Show in one of them,” he said.

“There's a lot of things as usual and it's a great big party where everyone enjoys themselves.

“In many respects the racing becomes secondary for the people on course.”
