QT to mark anniversary of 2011 floods
THE Queensland Times will publish special reports next week to mark the fifth anniversary of the 2011 floods which devastated the region.
Twenty one people lost their lives on January 10, 2011 following months of heavy rain which resulted in severe flash flooding throughout the region.
The tiny communities of Spring Bluff, Murphys Creek and Postmans Ridge were the first to be affected with six residents losing their lives in the floodwaters. Another person was killed at Helidon after being washed off the roof of his car. His body has never been recovered.
It was the wide-spread destruction and loss of life in Grantham that made headlines around the world.
Twelve Grantham residents were killed on the fateful afternoon after a wall of water tore through the tiny community, surprising residents with its force.
Those who escaped the deadly floodwaters spent hours clinging to trees or sheltering on their roofs, waiting to be rescued.
There was no loss of life in Ipswich but many homes and businesses were destroyed due to floodwaters.
