Putting the Humans of Central Queensland in the picture

WHEN Bec Ward asks people on the street if she can take their photo, the response is always surprising.

But the resulting conversation and portrait always leaves its mark.

Bec is one of the photographers behind the Humans of Central Queensland Facebook page, which shares the stories and thoughts of people around the region.

The page is based on the internationally renowned Humans of New York, which shares poignant thoughts from regular people on the city's streets with over 14 million people.

While the Central Queensland page hasn't got quite as many fans, it has been attracting attention locally, with a 3300-strong following.

The page was started by another Rockhampton photographer, Rebecca Winning, and Bec said she started taking photos for the human interest project at the start of the year.

Bec said photography had been her passion for years, and Humans of New York had been an inspiration.

"I'm just interested in people's stories, using photography as a platform for that," she said.

"There are so many interesting people out there; it's good to give them a voice.

"It's very intimidating, especially when you're a shy person.

"It's hard to approach people, but I find when you do they're pretty interesting."

Bec said she was surprised by the reaction of the people she had spoken to, with everyone happy to have a chat and pose for a picture.

She said she tried to hit the streets weekly to find new subjects, but had also found people by chance.

"If you engage with them, people are just nice," she said.

"In normal life you don't really talk to strangers, but maybe we should all do it more often."
