Ettamogah Pub turns 21

IT has been 21 years and they still have not managed to get that car off the roof?

Well, that might not be entirely true, but the Ettamogah Pub will celebrate its 21st birthday tomorrow.

The landmark – which has a distinctive 1927 Chevy on its roof – was officially opened by then Premier Mike Ahern on November 24, 1989, after a nine-month $4.5 million construction process.

General manager David Thompson called the pub iconic and world famous, describing it as an amazing achievement to have sustained for 21 years.

“It’s an absolute iconic venue,” he said . “We had the Barmy Army here this morning.

“They’ve just come up to see the pub and then they’re going back to Brisbane to wait for the cricket,” Mr Thompson said.

“One of them googled it before they left London and realised it was close, so they’ve hired a car, come up to look at the Coast, had lunch and seen the pub.”

The pub, at Palmview, was the brainchild of developer Lindsay Cooper.

It is one of four identical pubs around Australia along with the original in Albury in NSW and others in Sydney and Cunderdin, Western Australia.

It was completed just two years after the Albury one.

It is based on the pub featured in the popular Ken Maynard cartoon Ned and His Neddy, which appeared in The Australasian Post from 1960 to 1998.

In the Maynard cartoon, the car was washed up on the roof during a flood and its owners could not be bothered removing it.

The builders of the pub wanted to remain as faithful to the cartoon as possible and the car which sits atop the Sunshine Coast venue was donated by a family from Roma.

“I think it’s just amazing that it’s got to 21 years,” Mr Thompson said.

“Everyone knows the Etta.”
