Protest planned for beaches

THE recently formed Save the Northern Beaches Alliance has launched a website in the lead up to its Wall against Sprawl rally on Saturday.

Cr Mark Graham said the website would help co-ordinate public responses and create groundswell support.

“The community needs to band together to protect our precious green belts and the campaign launch is a spring- board for our Saturday rally where we will draw our line in the sand and make a wall against unsustainable urban sprawl,” Cr Graham said.

“We want the Planning Minister to prohibit these developments and the land to be purchased for future generations under the Coastal Lands Protection Scheme.”

Under the Coastal Lands Protection Scheme the Department of Planning has the authority to zone and acquire high conservation value coastal land.

In addition, the RTA is required to offset biodiversity loss from the Sapphire to Woolgoolga upgrade, and the Alliance is calling on it to contribute money from their habitat compensation fund to help purchase natural assets.

The rally kicks off at 11am at Emerald Beach carpark on Fiddaman Road.

The website is www.savecoffscoast.com.
