Proscovia to face Mentor might on debut
NETBALL: Lightning sharp-shooter Peace Proscovia will face a tough battle when she makes her Super Netball debut this weekend but she is ready for the fight, says Sunshine Coast coach Noeline Taurua.
The 29-year-old Ugandan was signed as Caitlin Bassett's replacement in the off-season and, after a busy pre-season at Sippy Downs, will make her maiden appearance in the Australian netball competition when the Coast clash with Collingwood on Saturday.
It won't be an easy night for Proscovia, with former Lightning captain Geva Mentor standing between her and the hoop. However, Taurua believed Proscovia could handle the challenge.
"We played Collingwood about six weeks ago in Tasmania in a pre-season game so she's got first-hand experience of Geva and realises what her experience and her dominance out on court is,” Taurua said.
Mentor has plenty of history with the club, leading them to two championships, and certainly packs plenty of punch in defence.
She led the league in deflections and defensive rebounds in 2018, earned Commonwealth Games gold with England in the same year and was Super Netball's player of the year in 2017.
Taurau said there had been discussions on how to approach Mentor in Saturday's clash but admitted they had largely centred around what Proscovia could bring to the battle rather than what her opponent would be aiming to do.
"We are always in that mindset where the opposition have to combat us, so that's the same with Peace,” she said.
"She's a great holder and is very strong in the air and when she is confident about herself it will be very hard for other people to combat her.
"So, we're trying to pump her up and get her ready and to enjoy her moment playing in her first SSN game which is awesome for a player from Uganda.”
Fellow off-season signing, and South African star, Phumza Maweni is also set to make her Super Netball debut this weekend at Melbourne Arena (5.15pm).
The Daily will have a four-page Super Netball and Lightning feature in Saturday's edition.
