Great Daine may give Sea Eagles a decisive edge

MACKSVILLE is heading to the Group 2 semi-finals with former NRL forward Daine Laurie added to the ranks.

The Yamba-born prop forward was a controversial figure in stints with Wests Tigers, Penrith and Newcastle and has been out of the limelight in recent seasons.

His most recent appearances were with Wyong Roos in 2013.

"Daine moved to Bowraville at the beginning of the year and we signed him just a few weeks ago," secretary Bill Richardson revealed.

"He made his debut in the win over Sawtell."

In tomorrow's local derby against Nambucca Heads, the Sea Eagles can consolidate a top-three position by winning while the Roosters are involved in a duel with Sawtell for the fifth spot in the play-offs.

The Panthers take on injury-riddled South Grafton.

Watching from the sidelines at Allen Gillett Oval will be members of the 1995 first grade and 1975 under-18 premiership-winning sides holding reunions.

"We will also be playing for the Tackling Domestic Violence Trophy as both clubs are now members of the program," Richardson said.

Today at 2.30pm, Geoff King Motors Oval will host the NSW Residents versus Queensland Residents match. This game has normally been the curtain-raiser to the third State of Origin match but this year it was decided to play it at a country venue.

Meanwhile, it will be a proud day for the Hulbert family at Bellingen Park tomorrow. Julian Hulbert debuts as a first grade referee after coming up through the ranks as a ball boy and player in the town.
