Project to get women on boards
THE inaugural meeting and launch of Women On Boards Mid North Coast will take place at Coffs Harbour's Bunker Cartoon Gallery next Tuesday from 6.30pm.
Following on from a meeting held in May, the new organisation will be a joint project of Business and Professional Women Coffs Harbour (BPW) and the local chapter of Zonta.
BPW president Andrea Cross has issued a general invitation for those women interested.
"This new project will encourage women on the Mid North Coast to upskill themselves in readiness for a board position," she said.
"There is a shortage of women on boards of all types and both government and industry are keen to redress this gender imbalance.
"It has been shown the bottom line improves when there is a better balance of men and women on boards."
Claire Braund, executive director and co-founder of Women On Boards will MC the evening, where three well-known local leaders will share career experiences that have led to board positions.
These guests are prominent solicitor Heather McKinnon, ETC board member (and past chair) Lorraine Mouafi and former chair of the Northern Rivers Catchment Management Authority, Dr Judy Henderson.
"Women currently make up only 7% of board positions in Australia," Ms Braund said.
"Regional women especially need to be informed about how to better prepare for a board position, understand the expectations and (learn) how to thrive in the board environment.
"The federal government has focussed on this area as women on boards improve both the bottom line and the functionality of organisations.
"Women on boards provide role models to inspire and motivate young women to achieve success."
A panel discussion will be held and a steering committee is to be formed of local women interested in pursuing the development and training of potential board members.
