NAIDOC Week Success

Congratulations to everyone involved in the organising of events for this year's NAIDOC Week which was packed with events. It began with a really well-attended official flag-raising ceremony at Council's Chamber. Each year, the crowd gets bigger and it's lovely to see so many young people coming along.

The ceremony also gave me the opportunity to acknowledge the achievements and hard work of the Aboriginal community through the prestigious Grace Roberts Memorial Community Development Awards.

The Awards recognise the contribution that local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples contribute to our community as a whole. Plus the Awards are an ideal way of highlighting just some of the achievements and excellent work being carried out by members of our local Aboriginal and Torres Strait communities.

This year's winners were Grace Roberts Memorial Community Development Award - Sue Tomkins, Aboriginal Community Organisation or Business of the Year Award - Bularri Muurlay Nyanggan, Academic Achievement Award - Jasmine Hovermann, Sports Achievement Award - Cassey Lynwood, Arts and Cultural Pursuits Achievement Award - Tony Dootson and Youth of the Year Award - Charlotte Bedford.

Three for One

A great new exhibition has opened at the Regional Gallery showcasing the varied works of three artists. John Bennett's photographs explore the half-hour before sunrise when light starts to flood the night sky, Jenni Catt's watercolours meditate on the transience of life and Angela Tay uses different types of media to capture the ever-changing nature ebbing tides. The exhibition is on until August 6.
