Program backs indigenous education

It may seem a small step but for a local indigenous team it could be the start of great strides towards closing the educational gap for local Aboriginal kids.

Last week the group was granted funds of $24,200 to run a Parental and Community Engagement Program (PaCE) in Coffs Harbour.

This project aims to increase the role of parents in their children’s education which is seen as a vital step in improving educational outcomes for indigenous students.

It is an initiative of the Federal Government through the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations.

Key Employment has been funded to support the Coffs Harbour Aboriginal Parent Learning Network to run a series of workshops within school communities to develop skills and empower parents to become more involved with their children’s schooling.

“Many Aboriginal people have had terrible even traumatic experiences within the education system.” said Jeanette Smythe one of the project coordinators.

“The workshops hope to relieve some of their anxiety by sharing information about how schools help children to learn, read and write. We aim to help parents and carers of Aboriginal children feel comfortable and confident in actively participating in their children’s education."

Chris Worboys, the CEO of Key Employment, said his company was keen to support the project and welcomed the opportunity to get behind it.
