Pretty in pink
IT may be the second biggest day on the Coffs Harbour racing calendar but tomorrow's Pink Silks Raceday is easily the most important community event to attend.
More than 2000 people are expected to attend tomorrow's TAB meeting and turn the track into a sea of pink as the Coffs Harbour Racing Club puts its significant muscle behind a major fundraising event.
Funds raised throughout the day will be used to help provide support and care for local women with the money raised to be distributed toNorth Coast BreastScreen, Palliative Care Service Coffs Harbour Health Campus, and the Coffs Harbour Women's Health Centre's Post Natal Depression Project.
The day has been a tremendous success since its inception two years ago and has raised nearly $60,000 for women's cancer services.
The goal this year is to reach $100,000 for the three days.
While there will be plenty of action on the course with a quality seven-race card featuring the $12,000 Pink Slipper Open Handicap over 1200 metres, there's plenty of action off the course to keep everyone happy.
For the grown ups there's Fashions On The Field with prizes going out for the best hat, most pink outfit and of course the best dressed lady.
Children under 16 will be admitted to the course for free and there will be a jumping castle and face painting among other activities for the kids including their own special Fashions On The Field parade.
Local trainer Joe Janiak and his champion sprinter Takeover Target will be arriving back in Coffs Harbour today and Janiak is hoping that the star can become part of the show. Depending on how his mate 'Archie' has handled the travel, Janiak is hoping his international superstar will be able to parade and do a special gallop for the crowd.
With gift bags being given out to the first 200 ladies to arrive at the track, a memorabilia auction at the end of the day, sky divers and the obligatory pink champagne for Pink Silks Day, there isn't a single reason for anyone not to be trackside tomorrow and get behind a worthwhile cause.
