Truckers' memorial procession gears up
PRAYING for clear skies, but prepared for a "rain, hail or shine" journey across the region, the organisers of Saturday's Lights on the Hill memorial convoy are ready for business.
Driving rain hampered last year's winding procession, but new president Gary "Simmo" Simpson said the day was about raising money and awareness about the plight of the truck driver - not keeping machines glimmering under the sun.
"Shiny trucks are not what it is all about," he said.
"We love to see them, but this is really about camaraderie, getting together and raising funds."
Each year, hundreds of trucks join two processions - one from Brisbane and one from Toowoomba - linking up at the Lights on the Hill memorial at Lake Apex in Gatton.
Mr Simpson expects 400 trucks to make the trek tomorrow.
The money raised will be used to extend the memorial, which honours the families of drivers lost on the roads.
Extra funds will also be donated to charities which support widows of truck drivers.
Police will escort the convoy, expected to reach speeds up to 80km h - faster than previous years to allay concerns about traffic build-up.
"The police were talking about letting us do 100km h this year, but we said it was probably too fast to let people on the side of the road get a good look," Mr Simpson said.
"We encourage people who aren't involved in the transport industry to come out and see the showcase.
"Nolan's Transport will lead the convoy from both ends this year, because over the years they have put so much into the event."
The Lights on the Hill convoy will set off from Brown and Hurley's Carrington Rd premises in Toowoomba at 10am on Saturday.
WE WERE LISTENING:
Channel 40 was booming with traditional truckers' humour during last year's Lights on the Hill convoy.
Here were some of the best calls:
- "There's nothing like giving your truck a chamois in the rain!"
- "Up it Wazza! Up it!" "Mate, your skirt's hanging out your door."
Caller 1: "What time are the trucks leaving? I'm on my way"
Caller 2: "Buddy, we left 20 minutes ago. Catch up."
- "I'll shout you one when we get there Baz."
- "Bob Katter's party will fix this bloody road. We'll get the bypass in quick smart."
