Port workers back on job after strikes

PORT workers have returned to work in Brisbane and Sydney following a court ruling against Hutchison Port's decision to sack 97 staff via text message and email.

The workers were informed by those methods last week they were to be sacked, prompting union action in the Federal Court.

Port workers and unions claimed a "round one" victory after days of industrial action on waterfronts around the country.

In a late-night hearing on Thursday, Justice Darryl Rangiah agreed with the maritime union that under their workplace agreement, staff should have been consulted about any sackings.

They will be paid until a full hearing early next month.
