Port powers ahead on plans for regional hub

PLANS to grow Mackay's port are powering ahead.

In good news for the region's economy, North Queensland Bulk Ports Corporation intends developing a strategic logistics facility within the port precinct to back up the region's mining and industrial sectors as a key distribution centre.

The corporation believes Mackay is in a prime position to be a central Queensland export hub.

NQBP is also about to embark on setting up a regular Mackay container shipping link with Brisbane and Townsville to transport goods.

It has called on business operators to "make a difference" and get involved with the Port of Mackay Community Reference Group to provide input into port planning and development.

NQBP revealed its intentions at this month's Diversify Mackay Leadership Alliance meeting.

Chief operating officer Jeff Stewart-Harris said a lot of work has been done regarding future development of its regional ports and Mackay had been assessed as having many opportunities.

He said the corporation sought "to do some innovative things" that would benefit its operations, with its board working through high level strategies to grow its businesses.

Mr Stewart-Harris said the key intent was to have the facility as a hub to service the Central Highlands and Bowen Basin, and in the future the Galilee Basin.

He said Mackay had substantial port land holdings for redevelopment, with plenty of scope to grow the existing facilities.

He said anyone who wanted to do business with the port could.

NQBP presides over three of six "priority port development areas" as identified by the government in its Queensland port strategy.
