SATURDAY'S Mary Poppins in the Park was the spoonful of sugar many needed to enjoy their day off after voting in this year's election.

Thousands filled the heritage streetscapes of Maryborough's CBD, which were transformed into Cherry Tree Lane of the Poppins novels for the festival's ninth year running.

The internationally recognised characters were brought to life by actors who roamed the streets, including Mary Poppins and Admiral Boom, who fired his time cannon every hour.

The annual Great Nanny Races drew a crowd to watch contestants dressed in traditional nanny uniforms walk as fast as they could to the finish line, pushing a classic-style pram complete with "baby" cargo.

Andrew Dower, senior events co-ordinator for Fraser Coast Opportunities said it was a great day out for everyone.

He said the fun of the Mary Poppins Festival was only half over, with events running throughout the next week, including the Moonaboola Street Party on Thursday and "What the River Told Me" performed by Ian Brown in the Bond Store Basement.

"It's all about celebrating the art of storytelling in the birth place of Mary Poppins creator Pamela L Travers," Mr Dower said.

"With so much to do, you will have a practically perfect day in every way."
