MPs promote local music

THEIR musical tastes and experience might be varied, but Federal and State MPs Luke Hartsuyker and Andrew Fraser are happy to play the same song when it comes to supporting a call for funding for Coffs Harbour Regional Conservatorium.

Both politicians have called for stronger support for the Con from the third tier of government – Coffs Harbour City Council – as well as providing their support for State and Federal program funding.

The two Nationals MPs were given a tour of the new conservatorium space at the Bray Street Complex on Friday.

Mr Hartsuyker said funding for a range of regional development programs hinged on council and the conservatorium’s application for Federal funds would benefit from very strong council support, especially financial support.

The chairman of the conservatorium board, Garry Nehl, said the council had not provided one dollar of support and as yet the board had money only for Stage I of the three-stage project, which will provide 12 acoustically-correct teaching studios.

Conservatorium director Carol Hellmers said she already had people wanting to book the 175-seat performance space which is the second stage of the planned conservatorium.
