Police catch 15 drink-drivers

YET again, police have been left wondering when Coffs Coast motorists will learn.

Fifteen locals got behind the wheel of their vehicles while over the limit during the past few days.

Police conducted Operation Coffs Roads from 3pm on Thursday to 3am on Sunday to curb our spiralling road toll and to catch out intoxicated drivers.

They carried out 850 breath tests and charged 15 people with drink-driving, a disturbing tally considering our region is the worst in the State for fatal road smashes and alcohol-affected motorists.

Highway patrol officers also clocked 10 speedsters and issued 18 other infringement notices.

Here’s a few examples of drivers who should be hanging their heads in shame:

A woman, 35, was charged with high-range drink-driving in Woolgoolga’s Nightingale Street at 12.20am on Saturday. She recorded a breath analysis of .170;

A 21-year-old P-plater ran into trouble in Hammond Street at Bellingen on Friday night. Police stopped the Hyundai Excel driver for a breath test at 11.55pm and he later returned a reading of .155;

A P-plater also went high-range in Coffs Harbour at 12.55am on Sunday. The 21-year-old returned a reading of .125;

Another P-plater was over the limit, this time at Coramba, police allege. The 26-year-old man returned a reading of .10 on Coramba Road on Thursday at 10.55pm.

The next police blitz on the Coffs Coast will be held on the June long weekend (June 11 to 14) when double demerit points will also be in force.

It has been given the fitting code-name Operation Stay Alert.
