Police sniff out drug use in pubs

DRUG use and alcohol-fuelled bad behaviour were in the firing line in a major police blitz on the Coffs Coast.

Local officers supported by a drug-detection dog from Byron Bay converged on pubs and clubs in Coffs Harbour, Bellingen, Woolgoolga and Corindi during Operation Saturation on Friday and Saturday nights with pleasing results.

“A number of people were searched as a result of the operation and we also conducted a large amount of bail compliance checks,” said Coffs/Clarence crime manager, Detective Inspector Cameron Lindsay.

“It was a high-visibility policing operation predominantly focused on drug detection as well as anti-social behaviour, alcohol-related crime and ensuring licensed premises were operating in accordance with licensing laws.

“It's been a successful operation because it sends a clear message that if you are in possession of illegal drugs you will get caught in the Coffs/Clarence local area command.”

Det Insp Lindsay said these operations were traditionally undertaken in summer and more were planned. Among the results:

  • a man, 49, was cautioned for the possession of five grams of cannabis;
  • a Woolgoolga man, 22, was cautioned for possessing two grams of cannabis;
  • a Bellingen woman, 48, was cautioned for possession of one gram of cannabis;
  • a man, 18, was issued with a cannabis caution in Coffs Harbour;
  • a woman, 27, was ordered to face court for possessing an ecstasy tablet in Coffs Harbour;
  • a Korora youth, 17, was arrested on Sunday morning for allegedly breaching his bail;
  • a Coffs Harbour youth, 17, was detected for an alleged bail breach.
