Police seek 11-year-old driver in high speed chase

A 11-year-old boy, who escaped Child, Youth and Family custody by fleeing at high speeds in a car in Auckland overnight, is being sought by police.

A member of the public reported seeing a Mitsubishi Galant being driven erratically by what appeared to be a child, in Papakura about midnight, police said.

Officers attempted to stop the vehicle, which fled police at speeds reaching 120km/h for about two minutes before the boy stopped the car and ran off on foot.

A passenger from the car was captured by police and confirmed that the driver was an 11-year-old who had escaped from CYF custody.

Police were continuing to hunt for the child today and establish the car's owners, a police spokesman said.
