Brother charged with axe murders of former Coast family

FORMER Sunshine Coast resident, 21 year-old, Henri van Breda has handed himself in to police and been charged with the murder of his parents and brother in South Africa.

Breda's parents Martin 54 and Teresa 55, who lived in Buderim between 2012 and 2014 were found hacked to death at De Zalze golf estate in the early hours of January 27, 2015.

Henri's brother Rudi was also killed during the attack, his 16 year-old sister Marlii was left with amnesia and has never been able to provide a witness statement about the horrific event.

South African media reports Henri handed himself over to Stellenbosch Police about 3.30pm on Monday (local time) and a video has since emerged on social media showing the moment the 21 year-old gave himself up to authorities.

Just over a year ago South Africa's Eyewitness News released a horrific statement from a member of the country's Criminal Intelligence Division who was one of the first to arrive on the scene.

It told how police arrived and found the front door ajar, then a young man thought to be Henri then exited covered in blood and told them "the problem" was upstairs.

Once they entered the property they found the bodies of two men in the main bedroom and two females were later found lying in front of the bedroom door, on a balcony.

Soon police realised Marli, then aged 16, who was lying covered in blood with a severed jugular vein and a fractured skull - was miraculously still alive.

However, she has since suffered from retrograde amnesia which has prevented her from testifying in relation to the attack.

In February last year South African media aired tapes of the call Henri put in to emergency services shortly after the attack took place.

After spending about three minutes calmly describing how to get to the property where four of his family members were laying covered in blood, the then 20 year-old was asked what was wrong.

"My..,my....my family and I were attacked, with an axe" he told the operator.

The operator then asked if the family were unconscious to which Breda replied: "Yes and bleeding from the head," before laughing.

He ended the call by calmly asking that emergency services contact him on his mobile phone when they arrived as he would be waiting in the street at the front of the property.
