Police investigate shooting

THE Queensland Police ethical standards unit is investigating the circumstances around a shooting by a police officer in Townsville that left a man fighting for his life.

The man was shot early on Monday and taken to Townsville Hospital with gunshot wounds to his stomach and right leg.

Police later confirmed the victim was in a critical condition after being shot outside a Charters Towers Rd United Petroleum service station about 3.45am.

United Petroleum's chief operating officer, David Szymczak, told Brisbane Times the business had nothing to do with the early morning drama.

He said the business was co-operating with police.

"They were shot on the footpath or on the road out the front of the service station," Mr Szymczak said.

It is believed the officers were chasing the man when the incident happened.
