Witnesses sought to the assault that left a man 'critical'

COFFS Harbour police would like to hear from anyone who witnessed an early morning fight outside a local hotel, which has left a man suffering critical head injuries.

Police said two men were involved in a physical altercation near a licensed hotel on Grafton St on Saturday about 1am.

During the fight, one of the men,  a 34-year-old from Sapphire Beach, fell and struck his head on the concrete footpath.

The man lost consciousness after he fell to the footpath and was taken to Coffs Harbour Health Campus.

He was later airlifted to John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle where he remains today in a critical condition.

The other man involved in the altercation, a 20-year-old from Boambee East, is assisting police with their inquiries.

Detectives would now like to speak to anyone who witnessed the fight or the circumstances leading up to it.
