Lucky fox terrier Ernie is now on the mend
"A LITTLE dog with a big heart" is how Sawtell's Dara Kennedy has described Ernie, her family's fox terrier.
Ernie was yesterday released from the veterinary practice having undergone extensive surgery since he was viciously mauled by a dog on Sawtell's Murray Beach last week.
"We are so lucky that Ernie has pulled through you won't believe how devastating this has been for us," Dara said.
Ernie is the family pet of Dara's son and daughter-in-law Patrick and Rebecca Kennedy and their three children.
Dr Adam Gerhardt, from Pacific Vetcare. said Ernie wasn't given the best of chance of surviving the attack.
"The dog bit him right across his back, broke his ribs and left a large hole that required a lot of stitches," Dr Gerhardt said.
The little foxie was attacked by the same great dane bull mastiff-cross that killed a poodle-spaniel on the beach.
Caught by rangers, the aggressive dog was surrendered by the owner and euthanased.
The owner, who has been fined $770 over the attack, told council rangers he searched for his dogs after they escaped.
The families of the dogs that were attacked say they are considering legal action to recover the cost of their vet bills, which exceed $5000.
