Player shortage proves Dorrigo's downfall

THE best efforts of an undermanned Dorrigo could not stop the Diggers from claiming their first top grade win of 2018.

Diggers' all-rounder Raman Phoonie claimed the wicket of Dorrigo's opener Justin Gilbert for eight, which started a trend of Dorrigo wickets going cheaply.

Dorrigo had just nine players at the weekend, with most failing to get many runs on the scoreboard.

But hard-hitting Luke Beaumont's 66, built from nine fours and two sixes, helped avoid a complete embarrassment for the visiting side at Fitzroy Oval.

In the end Dorrigo finished 8/132 which proved an easy target to chase for the full-strength Diggers.

Diggers comfortably overcame Dorrigo by seven wickets thanks to a fine knock by Phoonie (48) and Damon Roots (44 not out).

While over at the Coffs Coast Sport and Leisure Park last season's grand finalist Nana Glen scalped a three wicket win over the Coffs Colts.

For the second match in a row Nicklaus Stanlan-Velt produced a match winning all-round performance for Nana Glen. He took four wickets with the ball then followed up with a century with the bat.

Coming up this Saturday is another pair of one day matches - a grand final replay between Nana Glen and Sawtell at the Hockey Fields while Coffs Colts can wrap up fourth spot and a place in the semis with a win over Dorrigo at Coffs Coast Sport and Leisure Park.
