Play tackles the tough subjects

SEXTING, dating, social media use, anxiety and suicide are topics being tackled by a new theatre production showing in Bundaberg this weekend.

Elephant In The Room' tackles subjects that Bundaberg teenagers have identified as some of the biggest, most frightening issues they currently face.

Produced by Creative Regions and starring six young local actors, the play aims to lift the curtain on what these subjects mean to teens, and consider the challenges of managing privacy and relationships in a digital world.

Elephant In The Room has been created as part of Creative Regions' Socially Engaged Theatre program.

The multi-year program will see the company work with local government, community organisations, businesses and the not-for-profit sector to create provocative new work that addresses the big issues affecting communities.

For Elephant In The Room, creative producer Di Wills consulted with youth-focused service providers and local teenagers, all of whom listed smart phones, social media and mental health as amongst the most prevalent concerns for today's young people.

Ms Wills workshopped the script with a group of teenagers to ensure it reflected youth perspectives, and that the story was told in young voices.

Elephant In The Room is a show aimed at teenagers, parents, guardians and youth service-providers.

The one-off performance will be held at 7pm on January 28 in the backyard at Creative Regions in North Bundaberg.
