Pizza proposal leads to amazing 30 years together

EVERYONE went to Pizza Hut back in the '80s, but Tiana Fry is probably the only person who left with an engagement ring on her finger.

"My husband asked me to marry him one night while we were dining at the Pizza Hut...” she wrote on Facebook after the Daily Mercury asked readers for their favourite Caneland memories.

"While it's not the most romantic place in the world, love has won anyway,” she continued. "We celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary this September and I couldn't wish for anyone more perfect for me to do life with.”

Tiana and her husband Gary were a young couple who'd been talking about getting married back in April 1988.

She worked as an apprentice hairdresser at Stefan's Caneland store and after work one night they went out to Pizza Hut for a meal.

When Gary proposed and produced an engagement ring it came as a big surprise.

Her answer was 'yes' but with mobile phones a thing of the future, there are no photos capturing the exciting moment. They married 18 months later.

"It's certainly not a common place for a wedding proposal,” Tiana said.

And while she says it can be a bit "embarassing” when people ask 'where did you get engaged?', she wouldn't change a thing about the past 30 years.

"He's amazing. Thank goodness we don't rely on an amazing proposal for an amazing marriage.”

Tiana began her four-year hairdressing apprenticeship in 1985, working at all three Stefan salons in Mackay, including the Caneland salon which was opposite Gloria Jean's Coffees.

She then bought her own salon, Alons, which was next to Thornings in Wood Street, but left the business to be a stay-at-home mum to her children.

These days she only gives haircuts on the beach as part of the Shag Islet Cruising Yacht Club's annual Rendezvous in the Gloucester Passage in the Whitsundays.

Yachties were always keen to have a haircut, Tiana said, and the money she raised went to prostate cancer research and awareness.
