Pipefest coming to Coffs

IN another win for Coffs Harbour as a big-events capital, the city has been chosen as the Australian venue for Pipefest International – the world’s largest pipe and drum event.

Run every five years in Edinburgh, Scotland, the event raises funds for cancer research. In 2005, it raised a massive half a million pounds (about $AUD900,000).

This year, the event will be held again in Scotland on August 8, but will be expanded to be run simultaneously in the US, Canada, Australia, Hong Kong and England. Organisers hope it will attract more than 10,000 pipers and drummers worldwide.

Organiser Magnus Orr approached the NSW Highlanders band to select a venue in Australia and Coffs Harbour and the beautiful North Coast Regional Botanical Gardens were chosen.

The NSW Highlanders is a composite pipe band made up of pipe bands from around Northern NSW. The group was formed to give regional musicians the opportunity to play in the World Pipe Band Championships.

The NSW Highlanders will make their second trip to the world titles in 2011.

Coffs Harbour Mayor, Councillor Keith Rhoades, said it was fantastic that Coffs Harbour had been chosen to represent Australia.
