Pier Hotel to be grand again
WORK has started to restore the Pier Hotel to its former glory.
Proud pub owner Warren Skinner said a new roof is currently being installed on the Jetty strip building.
Tradesmen also are renovating five upstairs rooms into boutique accommodation.
"This is the start of the reinvigoration of the Pier Hotel," Warren said.
"I want to make it the iconic hotel it was during the 1950s.
"Then it had grand balconies and a real street presence.
"This is the first step in a staged redevelopment of the Pier Hotel.
"We will continue to trade through while the work is completed."
To restore the pub's former charm, Warren said boarded-up fireplaces are being uncovered inside the hotel rooms.
Chimneys are to be mounted on the roof.
Carpet has also been lifted to expose floorboards on the ground floor.
The hotel's painted staircase is being stripped back to a timber finish.
Warren said the $150,000 first stage of works should be completed in about a month's time. "When the renovation is finished, the Pier Hotel will be back to what it was," he said
"That was the iconic hotel on the Jetty strip that it used to be when it was known as the Grand Hotel."
