IT'S social and educational.
The Mackay Sailing Club's Try the 5 dinghy sailing event was a huge hit with about 25 people attending to give the sport a go.
It brought people of all ages to Kinchent Dam to take part in the event, which is part of an initiative by Mackay Regional Council to get people out there trying new things.
Club commodore Geoff Osborne said it was wonderful to see everyone have a sail and a great time.
Mr Osborne has been sailing on and off for forty years and said the mixture of skills involved including tactical and technical skills for racing, or just being out on the water and the enjoyment of mucking around was what made the sport fun.
"We've got kids from six years old, through to our oldest sailor is 76,” he said.
"It's a skill that can be used as a social thing, you can muck around or sail competitively ... it can take you to the Olympics, you can use it in a career.
"That's what we want to encourage ... there are no screens involved, they're thinking about what they're doing, it builds resilience and self-reliance.”
