Peter picks up award for his column

THE Coffs Coast Advocate is celebrating success this week after scooping a prestigious award at the APN Newspapers Readership Awards.

Weekly columnist Peter Rowe beat off some stiff opposition from other newspapers in the group to take out the 2009 Columnist of the Year award.

The category is designed to recognise the importance of local, diverse opinions in our newspapers and the judges were looking for a writer whose regular contributions best demonstrate an ability to demonstrate passion, discussion and interest among readers.

“The point of any column is to make people stop and think; the point of a column in a regional or local paper is to make them stop and think about something local,” said the judges in theircomments.

“Proudly owning up to be on the side of all grumpy old men, Pete pens a weekly column where no subject is considered off limits,” the judges commented.

“Not everyone agrees with what Peter says - he doesn't take prisoners - but everyone reads his column.”

  • Read Peter's column in the Coffs Coast Advocate every Tuesday.
