BMW M4 GTS and CSL Hommage R Concepts revealed

PRODUCTION POSSIBLE: The BMW M4 GTS would follow a long line of road-going but track-focussed M3s.

BMW'S M Division is master at reminding us the German giant has never forgotten its heritage or power to excite.

Pebble Beach saw BMW show off two very special concepts - a track-oriented M4 GTS based on the M4 Coupe, and a 3.0 CSL Hommage R racing concept in the mould of its recent 3.0 CSL Hommage road concept.

The M4 GTS is a car we can feasibly imagine reaching production before long. This road-going but track-focused edition would follow in the tradition of BMW special M3 editions of years past, namely the E30 M3 Evo and M3 Sport Evo (1988-1990), M3 GT (1995), M3 CSL (2003), M3 GTS (2010) and M3 CRT (2011).

Key features of these models include technology honed in race competition, a power hike, shedding weight and limited production numbers.

BMW said the Concept M4 GTS showcased new technologies destined to make their series production debut in a new model to be unveiled at a later date.

These include an innovative water injection system that has boosted output and torque in the M4 MotoGP Safety Car, and rear lights with "organic light-emitting diode" technology for some late-night visual flair.

The M4 GTS also features a manually adjustable carbon fibre front splitter and rear wing, carbon fibre bonnet, and polished light-alloy wheels with orange accents.

Yet eclipsing the GTS for sheer beauty was the BMW 3.0 CSL Hommage R, introduced to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the legendary 3.0 CSL's 12 Hours of Sebring victory in 1975.

Dressed in BMW Motorsport's evocative colours and over 21-inch matt gold wheels, the body is a blend of huge wheel arches, giant integrated rear spoiler, laser lights and black front splitter, side skirts and double rear diffuser.

Inside the high-tech cabin - looking decidedly luxurious for a racing car -  is flush with carbon fibre, including for the roll cage, with a retro wooden instrument panel.

No powertrain details as yet on the Hommage R, but we do know we want to see one racing, and now.
