Patient leaves Cairns Hospital after Ebola scare

THE Queensland nurse at the centre of last week's Ebola scare has been discharged from Cairns Hospital.

Sue-Ellen Kovack, 57, said on Monday the outpouring of support from family, friends and Australians had been overwhelming.

A second test at the weekend cleared the nurse of the virus.

"It is a huge relief the tests have cleared me of having the Ebola virus and it confirms that our protection and safety measures are working well," she said.

"The past few days have been a worrying and taxing time and it has meant I have not had much time to fully process the challenges I had in West Africa, treating people sick with Ebola, seeing people die and helping to control this dreadful virus."

Ms Kovack said the international community needed to do more to help combat the spread of the virus.

"The international community needs to do so much more right now to stop Ebola in its tracks, before it really gets right out of control," she said.

"Most importantly to me, I am sending a message to my fellow medical professionals who are thinking about heading over to treat the sick and work at bringing Ebola under control . . . please, please do it."

Ms Kovack made headlines last week after being admitted to hospital with a slightly elevated temperature amid fears she had contracted the deadly virus.

She had spent the past month volunteering at an Ebola hospital in Sierra Leone.
