Coffs Creek cycleway progresses

TRANSFORMATION of the Coffs Creek cycleway is well underway.

The upgrade of the $12m shared path and cycleway began last month and it already looks impressive.

“By improving the existing path, we’re giving locals and visitors the chance to enjoy a healthy, safe and pleasant way of moving between the city centre and the Jetty area,” Coffs Harbour Mayor, Councillor Keith Rhoades, said.

“This route will give everyone – whatever their fitness level – the opportunity to experience one of the city’s most attractive areas.

“We believe the upgraded route will become a visitor attraction in its own right.”

Once completed, the new shared path and cycleway will help link the CBD with some of the city’s major tourist destinations – the Regional Botanic Garden, Pet Porpoise Pool, Jetty Beach and Park Beach. In addition, it will provide a new commuter route for residents who live in the Jetty area but work in the city centre.

“People will be able cycle to work, the shops or the beach without having to deal with cars or trucks. This will be a great asset to Coffs Harbour,” added Stephen Sawtell, Council’s general manager. “Also, thanks to the Federal Funding, we will be able to provide work for up to nine people during the construction period.”

Funds for the project were received from the Government’s Economic Stimulus Plan and through a generous donation from Barbara and the late Allen Hogbin.
