Woolworths look for new deliverer

POSITION vacant: home grocery delivery person in Coffs Harbour, must have friendly disposition and enjoy dealing with older people.

That’s the job up for grabs next week when the deliverer for Woolworths in Park Avenue and Coles in the Palms Centre calls it a day.

Local celebrity Toni Mooy-Hurley would be one of thousands of people who have relied on home deliveries from the Woolworths supermarket over the years.

“When they told me the other day, I was furious,” said the 91-year-old.

“How the hell can you manage without it. I’m disabled and I use a walking stick so it’s important for me to shop like that.

“You just can’t do it otherwise.”

Mrs Mooy-Hurley has relied on home deliveries from Woolworths in Park Avenue for almost 30 years and uses this vital service at least once a month, sometimes every two weeks.

“This is terrible for a population this size not to have home deliveries. I sure do rely on it and I think a whole lot of other people do, too,” she said.

“I also get Meals on Wheels and I don’t drive anymore.”

The area manager for Woolworths, Allen Wright, confirmed the company’s long-time delivery person working out of the Park Avenue store had handed over the business six weeks ago.

The new contracted deliverer was now unable to continue, Mr Wright said.

“We’re struggling to find someone to replace him and we’re very disappointed we’ve been unable to find anyone at this stage,” he said.

“We find the way our business is going for many people these days is the online home shop option where people order their groceries from home and have them delivered out of Kempsey by refrigerated truck.”

A Coles Palms Centre spokesman confirmed its deliverer, who will finish up soon, had been delivering shelf items only because he did not have a refrigerated van.

The spokesman also believed a replacement deliverer was being sought.
