Pair accused of murdering toddler remanded in custody

A SUNSHINE Coast man who appeared in the Brisbane Magistrates Court charged with the murder and torture of a toddler has been remanded in custody.

Matthew Ian Anthony Scown, 32, is accused of torturing four-year-old Tyrell Cobb over several days in May 2009.

Police were called to a Biggera Waters unit on the Gold Coast on May 24, 2009, where Tyrell was found unconscious.

He was transported to hospital, where he died.

A 32-year-old Brisbane woman reported to be Tyrell's mother, Heidi Strbak, faced court on Thursday on the same charges.

Mr Scown and Ms Strbak's next court dates were set down for September 21.

They were arrested on Thursday after another police investigation revealed new information surrounding Tyrell's death.

In 2010 a prosecution case over the toddler's death was withdrawn.
