Page MP backs growers

FEDERAL member for Page Janelle Saffin says she strongly supports Coffs Coast banana growers and shares their concerns about the Rudd Government's decision to allow the importation of bananas from the Philippines.

Ms Saffin hit back at comments from Cowper MP Luke Hartsuyker and his Federal Leader Warren Truss about the industry last week.

And Ms Saffin says she has been in regular contact with the office of Minister for Agriculture Tony Burke to express her concern and to seek assurances that every quarantine condition will be most strictly enforced.

“I have conveyed to Mr Burke's office the expectation that each of these conditions will be strictly enforced and compliance on the ground will be vigilantly monitored,” she said.

“This includes the continued presence and involvement of the Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service in ensuring compliance on the ground in the Philippines.

“I have examined the extensive list of quarantine conditions that must be met before the importation of bananas from the Philippines will be considered.”
