SHOOPERBS will be a team to be reckoned with this Sunday when they compete in the annual Kids In Need Dragon Boat Festival.

Owner of Gj’s shoe store in Murwillumbah, Carolyn Thornton said she had donated vouchers for the past four years but was taking the next step with a team in this year’s festival.

“We’ve all really enjoyed the practise runs and we are all very excited to compete this weekend,” Mrs Thornton said.

The team of 21 friends have trained at the Seagulls Club the past two Sundays.

“We’re all amateurs, but my competitive streak has kicked in and I really want to win now,” Mrs Thornton said.

“Being a mum and running a shoe store where we see a lot of kids, I think it’s a great cause to get involved with.”

One of the longest-running dragon boat festivals in Australia, the Kids In Need charity day will celebrate its 25th year this weekend with 30 teams entered.

Committee member Margaret Lawson said this year’s festival would be held at the Condong Reserve, McLeod Street, Condong.

The festival was moved because of the Jack Evans Boat Harbour refurbishment.

Heats kick off at 8am with finals from 1.30pm.
