Pacific Highway reopened at Ballina after traffic fatalities

UPDATE 5pm

Transport Management Centre advises the Pacific Highway has been cleared and traffic is now flowing.

NORTHBOUND motorists heading for Queensland and northern NSW destinations will find the Pacific Highway closed in both directions for some time, 5km south of Ballina, due to a fatal accident.

Emergency services and police investigators remain at the site and motorists are being diverted via Summerland Way and the Bruxner Highway.

Due to the nature of the incident there is no forecast as to when the highway will reopen.

About 6.20am today, two vehicles collided at the scene.

Emergency services were called to the scene and found a 33-year-old man on the roadway.

He suffered serious injuries, was treated at the scene and later airlifted to Gold Coast Hospital in a serious condition.

One vehicle was engulfed in flames and once the flames were extinguished, police discovered two bodies within the car.

A crime scene has been established by police and will be examined by forensic specialists.
