Orara made short work of title

JUDGING by these fine strapping fellows that won the 1954-55 1st grade title for Orara United, perhaps cricket might do well to return to the days of wearing shorts on a Saturday afternoon.

It’s been just more than 20 years now since an Orara cricket team last graced a Coffs Harbour cricket field but the club was a healthy part of the local scene for nearly 70 years.

When the team won the title in the 1950s there was no final played that year. The club also managed to win the first grade title in 1928-29 (the summer a chap named Bradman made his Test debut), 1967-68, 1976-77 and 1981-82.

There was an Orara River Association formed in 1930-31 and that stayed in existence until 1949-50 before that association merged with Coffs Harbour. Records show there was no actual Orara team in the Orara River competition but it no doubt formed the backbone of some of the stronger teams in that era.

If an Orara side were to return to Coffs Harbour cricket maybe it will be then that wearing shorts will become the fashion again.
