OPINION: Reality show love rarely works out off camera

THE BACHELOR Blake Garvey has regularly said he's been on a journey to find love.

Yes that dreaded buzz word reality TV producers love - journey, yuck.

But the bizarre environment created by the reality dating show really just sets its coveted hunk and bachelorettes up for failure.

Last year's lovebirds Tim Robards and Anna Heinrich are a bit of a fluke. They're still together and seemingly happy, but they're a rarity as far as Bachelor couples go.

While Australia is only two seasons into The Bachelor, Americans have seen 18 seasons of The Bachelor and nine season of The Bachelorette. Out of all of those shows, only five couples are still together.

The winning couples from the first 12 seasons of The Bachelor US broke up, although to be fair some didn't split until several years after the show.

You could argue that we face the same struggles in everyday dating life, but I think The Bachelor sets up unrealistic expectations for what a relationship with The Bachelor is going to be like after the cameras stop rolling.

How can you truly say you know someone, and love them, if your only interactions are when a TV production crew put you together. You can't call him on the phone for a late-night chat, or hang out with him socially to see how he interacts with your friends.

And how could a smitten girl not get caught up in the moment when she's being ferried by private yacht to a secluded island for a beachside picnic with an orchestra playing in the background?

Out of all this year's bachelorettes I reckon Sunshine Coast-raised Lisa Hyde was the most realistic about the whole premise, reluctant to tell a man who was dating so many other women that she loved him until last night's finale.

"Let's be honest, you're not going to be getting jet planes and super yachts to venues all the time," she told me recently.

"You've got to be a little open-minded with this whole experience. It's not normal."

Some fans reckon Blake should have chosen the more mature, and family-keen, Lisa.

There is precedence for a Bachelor reigniting the flame with a runner up after breaking it off with his original first choice.

Jason Mesnick from the 13th season of The Bachelor US eventually married runner-up Molly Malaney after famously dumping fiancé Melissa Rycroft on the "After the Final Rose" special.

So if Blake did try to patch things up with Lisa after dumping her on national TV, at least he wouldn't be the first Bachie to do so.
