OPINION: Community spirit at an all time high

DESPITE what has been a tragic and sombre week, our community has still managed to pull through to continue supporting local events.

This past weekend we had the Goomeri Pumpkin Festival and the Nanango Races. Both were a success, and largely supported by locals.

The Goomeri Pumpkin Festival drew in a record crowd this year, yet again.

This was the first year the festival expanded to cover four consecutive days, and had streets closed for the event.

What started out as an event to give locals some relief from their struggles (mainly drought related at the time), has proven a South Burnett favourite once again.

The Nanango Races were also a lovely event, with many well dressed locals in attendance.

Last Friday a South Burnett local tragically passed away following a road accident at the Haly street intersection (outside of our office).

As a small rural community, we tend to all feel the loss of one of our own.

I believe it speaks volumes about the nature and diligence of our community that in a time of mourning, the South Burnett still picked themselves up and went about supporting the hard working local volunteers who have spent months making this past weekend's events possible.

Community events such as these provide a social and upbeat atmosphere for the South Burnett.

Isolation has proven an issue in rural communities time and time again, but here we are able to combat this by coming together to celebrate what our community has to offer.

There are still many events, run by hard-working locals, to look forward to this year.
