Open day showcases Orara Blacks

AN open day on the Orara Blacks cattle breeding program will be held at Big River at 700 Upper Orara Road on Sunday.

On display will be sires, females, six- to eight-month-old bulls, heifer calves and sale bulls from Phil and Diana Doyle’s herd.

Their Orara Blacks composite breeding program began in 1996 and is based primarily on combining Angus with Gelbvieh and Brahman.

Inspection of the herd will begin at 11am with lunch provided at 12.30pm.

It is at this time that the guest speaker, Dr Stephan Geist from Pacific Vet Care Coffs Harbour will speak on three newer diseases that have shown up on the North Coast this year.

They are the domestic and wild dog-carried abortion-causing Neospora; the bush tick-carried wasting disease Thieliria and the debilitating Pestivirus.

Unfortunately these are becoming more numerous, with vaccination and management strategies essential in their prevention and control.

For further information contact Phil Doyle on 6653 8352 or just turn up.
