Mackay Sugar investigating crash between train and tractor

UPDATE 12.15pm:

MACKAY Sugar chief executive Jason Lowry said a full investigation will be conducted into the collision between a Mackay Sugar locomotive and a haulout tractor this morning.

Mr Lowry said the crash happened at Sunnyside siding south of Racecourse Mill, and while the haulout tractor was substantially damaged there was only minor damage to the locomotive.

He said the derailed bins were empty when the crash happened.

A Workplace Health and Safety Queensland spokesman said it had an inspector on site this morning and was conducting initial inquiries into the incident.

UPDATE 9am:

MACKAY District Duty Officer (DDO) Mark Sweetnam was at the scene and said while the cause of the crash was unknown, the train driver had been "extremely lucky" not to be injured when the tractor ploughed into the cabin.

"The loco has actually hit the tractor right on the side. It's caused extensive damage, he's hit right in the cabin, where the driver was. It's very lucky he's not injured, extremely lucky," he said.

"We don't know exactly why he has gone under the tracks until we get the chance to have a chat with him."

He said there were about 15 bins derailed and there was quite a bit of damage to the haul-out tractor, which were still down on the private property.

"It's quite a mess down there," he said.

The said firies, ambulance and police crews attended and Queensland Workplace Health and Safety had been notified.

A Mackay Base Hospital spokeswoman said the 24-year-old man who had driven the tractor arrived at hospital at 8.23am, but was not admitted.

The train driver was believed to be a man in his 60s and his assistant was a 26-year-old woman. Neither were taken to hospital.
