On ya bike, Zeno

IT'S NOT quite the Tour de France but Zeno Baston is scraping wheels with some very famous names on his visit to Europe.

Zeno caught up with semi-retired champion and one time clubmate Cadel Evans and reminisced about the thousands of laps each had covered on the old Brelsford Park track.

However, racing was the business of the Coffs Harbour Cycle Club member and 57-year-old retired banana farmer.

He rode with Evans, star cyclist Scott Sunderland and Aussie comedian Hamish Blake in the Trois Etapes Giro, a three-day and three-stage fundraising event in the Italian Dolomites.

Next up adventure was the famous Nauders am Reschenpass Ride Across The Alps, the toughest one-day ride in the business.

With wife Mandy and family members in the support crew, Zeno was one of only 46 riders single-minded enough to tackle the 32-hour torture test through three countries.

Most amazing is this is the second time he's taken on the mountain peaks.

"I was lucky enough to have some of the family by my side including Mandy, daughter Sheree, son-in-law Scott and grandson Leon," Zeno said.

"Along the way they were there to encourage, feed and give me the cheering needed to complete this gruelling race."

Before the trip, training rides included multiple trips up and down Dorrigo and Lowanna mountain.
