On track to the polling booth for Local Government elections

PREPARATIONS by the NSW Electoral Commission have hinted communities across the state will hit the polling booths on September 10 for local government elections.

An Electoral Commission spokesperson confirmed the organisation was in the early stages of booking polling venues throughout NSW.

Bellingen Mayor Mark Troy said he was aware the commission had already booked two voting venues in the Bellingen Shire while Nambucca Mayor Rhonda Hoban said three venues had been approached by the commission in her LGA.

However the Minister for Local Government Paul Toole has not confirmed whether the September 10 election will go ahead for all councils statewide or for those who won't be amalgamated or merging.

In the meantime, Local Government NSW president and Coffs Harbour City councillor Keith Rhoades said councils who were free from amalgamation and mergers would be going to the polls on September 10 and remaining councils would hold elections in March next year.

He said the uncertainty surrounding the election dates was inconvenient for councillors, causing delays for those wanting to retire, take holidays or new candidates wanting to take positions on council.

The concerns of Cr Rhoades resonate with Cr Troy who said splitting the local government elections "may be very messy".

"I think everyone in local government is anxious because September 10 isn't far away," Cr Troy said.

"It would be better to conduct elections right across the state at one time however I don't think this is possible by September 10."

Cr Rhoades expressed frustration at Mr Toole's reluctance in confirming the election dates.

"The minister needs to clear up when the elections will be," Cr Rhoades said.

"Let's not leave it another three to four weeks, let's do it as soon as possible."
