Editorial - Wednesday, August 5: On track for a busy spring

YOU have to love this time of year, the days start to get longer and warmer, the wattle has burst into full bloom and judging by the events calendar you know spring is just weeks off.

From a news perspective when the Coffs Coast Cycle Challenge rolls around we know as a news team that a busy few months lie ahead.

Days don't get much busier than The Carlton MID Coffs Harbour Gold Cup Race Day.

A social celebration of Coffs Harbour, it's a great day spent at the track in leisure, but just as many hands and countless hours of work go into making the day a success, with full credit to the racing club and the sponsors who make it all possible.

The puzzling thing I've found about Cup Day is that while it's a gazetted half day holiday there are still many businesses that stay open with staff working the full day.

Perhaps it's a reflection of how many people locally work for national and multi-national companies.

In the spirit of community, it would be great to see more businesses honour the half-day holiday.

Every parent and grandparent knows what's more important than picking winners in the early races is picking up the kids from child centres and schools before noon.
