On the run Coffs man wanted by police

POLICE say they are determined to capture a man who is on the run in Coffs Harbour.

Two police officers saw the Coffs Harbour 27-year-old – who is wanted for an alleged assault in Coffs Harbour earlier this month – in the CBD about noon yesterday. When they tried to arrest him, the man resisted and the officers used capsicum spray.

It is alleged that during the struggle, the man tried to remove the officers' firearms.

The man fled from the scene and as many as 12 police officers were called in to look for him.

They concentrated their search on bushland surrounding Coffs Creek including the scrub in and around the historical cemetery, the Botanic Garden, the showground and the Olympic pool.

“Unfortunately, the man escaped, despite the best efforts of police,” Chief Inspector Shane Cribb said.

“They entered the creek and waded through the water in an attempt to arrest him.

“The community can be assured that we will do everything in our power to arrest him.”

The man is described as having a muscular build, with an olive complexion, brown hair, 180cm tall, and was last seen wearing jeans.

Anyone with information on the man's whereabouts is urged to contact Coffs Harbour police on 6652 0299, or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
