Old-timers back to the future
IT HAS been 20 years since Sawtell won the first grade men’s grand final and on Friday night, several players from that victorious team returned to the winner’s dais in the over-35s grand final.
The grand final was the one most had anticipated with Sawtell, the premiers, up against three times defending champion Bellingen Blitz.
Sawtell came away with a 6-2 win to clinch the title, however Bellingen made a game of it to draw level at 2-2 midway through the first half.
Three more goals before half-time finished the match off for Sawtell as the season’s goal-scoring spree showed no signs of slowing up.
The second half was obviously a more even affair on the scoreboard, however wasteful finishing and some desperate defending prevented the Spirit from enlarging the final score.
Just the one goal in the second half brought the final score to 6-2 in favour of Sawtell, which has been the front-runner in the over-35s from day one in 2010.
The game was played in good spirit and in front of a large and vocal crowd.
Sawtell has never won the over-35s competition before, although when it was split into two divisions the Spirit won the lower division three times in the past.
This season, however, the green and whites put it all out there and finished ahead of the pack.
