Oil leak leads to offender

POLICE followed a trail of oil through the streets of Corindi Beach last month to track down an intoxicated driver who crashed his vehicle after leaving a local hotel.

It was revealed in court this week Craig Robert Curtis, 19, of Hope Island in Queensland, crossed onto the wrong side of the road in Pacific Street and crashed into a tree on a nature strip on June 12 at about 6.45pm.

A nearby resident witnessed the accident and contacted police.

Officers arrived at the scene noticing a fresh oil leak running down the road.

They followed the trail into the town’s caravan park and found a vehicle that had damage consistent with the crash scene.

Curtis was found inside a tent well affected by alcohol and when questioned admitted to being behind the wheel.

He was breath analysed at the station and returned a reading of 0.095.

When interviewed he said he drank six to eight beers between 12pm-5.30pm, before leaving the hotel.

Found guilty of mid-range drink driving, he was disqualified from driving for eight months, fined $350 and ordered to pay court costs.
