Oh my cod! Big catch in Mann River

WITH yesterday's frost, the fish were turning in the Mann River enough for Curtis Parker to catch a beast of an eastern freshwater cod.

"I knew the way she hit the surface, she moved a lot of water," said Mr Parker who was fishing from a kayak.

"I was fishing for bass and she turned up, it had be towed around the kayak.

"I was only using 12 pound tackle."

It took 15 minutes for Mr Parker to reel in the enormous fish and by the end he was pretty happy with himself.

"It was a pretty good surprise. I was pumped, there was a couple of yahoos," he said.

"I was on my own so I has no one to rub it into."

Mr Parker fishes on the Mann River around three days a week and has caught a few fish this big in his time.

"I've caught 3 or 4 over a metre ... you get a lot of cod, but that size is sorta one in a thousand."

But he didn't get a chance to get the fish's weights and measurements because she shook her head and was released prematurely.

"I was just keeping her in the water... while I got my mat out," he said.

"I tried to her her weight but it had a head shake.

"I reckon she was a metre, a bit over a metre."

Mr Parker, who is the co-owner of the Mann River Caravan Park at Jackadgery, said he fishes all year round with a catch and release policy.

"I don't eat fish, I just catch them," he said.

"I only use barbless hooks so every lure in my tackle box is crimped.

"If the take is down deep, it won't kill it."
